What changes the price of a composite door?
The price of a composite door changes with five things: the size of the opening, the amount and style of glass, the colour, the hardware you choose, and the frame that goes around the door. Each one is set on the survey and written into your quote.
- Size. A standard opening costs less than a wide or tall one that needs a larger slab and frame.
- Glass. A solid slab is the starting point, and every glazed design adds to it, with larger or decorative panes costing more.
- Colour. Standard colours sit in the base price, while some shades and a different colour on each face can cost extra.
- Hardware. Handles, knockers, letterplates, numerals and a higher grade cylinder each add a line to the quote.
- Frame. The new frame comes with the door, and its colour and any added side panel or top light change the price.

How much do a side panel and top light add?

What do cheaper composite door quotes leave out?
Cheaper composite door quotes often leave out an anti-snap cylinder, a new frame and the making good around the opening, so the low figure covers less work and a lower security specification than a fuller quote does. Ask every installer to put these items in writing:
- Cylinder grade. A standard euro cylinder can be snapped. An anti-snap cylinder resists that attack, and the quote should name its grade.
- Frame. A new slab hung in an old frame can leave gaps, uneven seals and locks that fail to line up.
- Making good. Plaster repairs, internal trims, the cill and sealing around the outside all take time and materials.
- Removal. Taking away and disposing of the old door and frame belongs on the quote.
- Threshold. The threshold height and finish change how the door seals and how easy it is to step through.

Is the old frame reused or replaced?
The old frame is replaced in most composite door jobs: a composite door is made and supplied as a complete doorset, with the slab hung in its own matched frame so the locks, hinges and seals line up from the day it is fitted. Reusing an old frame saves a little money up front and puts that fit at risk.
The frame also has a part to play in security. PAS 24 tests the complete doorset, door and frame together, so a new slab in an old frame loses the tested combination. A new frame brings a new threshold too, and that is the part that takes the most wear and lets rain in when it fails. Your surveyor checks the existing opening on the free survey and tells you if anything about your wall or threshold changes the job.
